Limits are per piece and are the published maximums for standard parcel services. Contract terms, freight services and specific lanes can differ — this is a first check, not an acceptance guarantee.

Questions people ask about this

What happens if my parcel is over the limit?

It depends how far over. Most carriers have a band above the standard limit where they accept the parcel but add an oversize or additional-handling surcharge, and a hard limit above which they refuse it or reroute it to freight pricing. The surcharge is frequently larger than the base shipping cost.

Why does my box get surcharged when it is under the weight limit?

Size limits and weight limits are separate tests, and additional handling can be triggered by length alone, by the packaging material, or by the parcel not being a regular rectangle. A long, light item like a curtain pole is a classic case.

Where these numbers come from

Rates and rules change, and a calculator running on stale data is worse than no calculator. Every figure below carries the date we last checked it and a confidence level, so you can judge how much weight to put on it.

Parcel size, weight and fee standards Combined length and girth: 108 inches maximum for most services, 130 inches for USPS Ground Advantage. Between 108 and 130 inches the parcel is priced as oversize. USPS Primary source
