USPS changed its dim divisor in July. A lot of calculators still have it wrong.
On 12 July 2026 USPS moved from a 166 divisor to 139 and started rounding fractional inches up. Here is what it does to a real parcel, and how to check whether a tool has caught up.

That is the whole change, and if you ship anything bulky it is worth about 19% on the billable weight of every affected parcel. What makes it interesting is not the size of the increase — carriers raise prices constantly — but how quietly it happened and how many tools have not noticed.
What actually changed
Two things, on the same date.
The divisor moved from 166 to 139. And USPS started rounding every fractional inch up rather than to the nearest inch, which quietly adds a bit more on top of the headline change.
It applies to Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, USPS Ground Advantage and Parcel Select, and only to packages larger than one cubic foot — 1,728 cubic inches. Under that threshold, dimensional weight still does not apply at all, which is why small-parcel sellers may not have felt anything.
The filing went to the Postal Regulatory Commission on 11 May 2026 under docket CP2026-8, with a news release the same day. Then it took effect two months later and, as far as I can tell, most of the internet carried on as normal.
Run the arithmetic on a real box
First, a correction to an example you will see repeated everywhere, including in most of the coverage of this change: a 12 by 12 by 12 inch box is not affected. It is exactly 1,728 cubic inches, and the rule applies to parcels that exceed one cubic foot. The cube bills on scale weight. I had this wrong myself until I read the Domestic Mail Manual rather than the commentary.
So take a carton that genuinely qualifies: 14 by 12 by 12 inches, which is 2,016 cubic inches.
Under the old rule: 2,016 ÷ 166 = 12.1 pounds, rounded up to 13.
Under the new one: 2,016 ÷ 139 = 14.5 pounds, rounded up to 15.
Two pounds does not sound like much until you notice it happens on every unit. Ship 400 of those a month and you have moved 800 pounds of billable weight that does not exist in physical reality. Whatever your rate per pound is, multiply it by 9,600 pounds a year and that is the annual cost of a change that was announced in a regulatory docket.
The rounding rule compounds it, and this is the part almost nobody implements. DMM 113.1.3 says to round each measurement up to the nearest whole inch before multiplying. A carton measuring 12.1 inches on every side is charged as 13 by 13 by 13 — 2,197 cubic inches instead of 1,771. That is a 24% jump bought with a tenth of an inch.
How to check whether a tool has caught up
This is the part I would actually spend two minutes on. Open whatever calculator you normally use, put in 14 × 12 × 12 inches, and select USPS.
If it says 13 pounds, it is running on pre-July rules. If it says 15, it has been updated. If it does not let you pick USPS separately from FedEx and UPS, it is applying one divisor to everything and you cannot tell.
Then try a 12 inch cube. If it returns any dimensional weight at all, the tool has not implemented the one-cubic-foot threshold — which is most of them.
When we audited this before building our own, the page ranking first for “dimensional weight calculator” still printed USPS 166 — and omitted DHL entirely, despite DHL being the carrier that popularised the 5000 divisor in the first place. That is not a small oversight on a page whose only job is to be right about divisors.

The full divisor table lists the old USPS figure alongside the new one, marked as historical, because if you are reconciling an invoice from June you still need the old number.
The bit nobody mentions
USPS is not an outlier here. UPS has run two different divisors for years — 139 on a daily account and 166 at the retail counter — which means the same parcel is genuinely cheaper on dimensional weight if you walk into a store than if you have a contract. I have never seen a carrier advertise that.
Air freight sits at 6000 in metric, or 167 kilograms per cubic metre, which is gentler than the courier standard of 5000. Australia Post uses 4000, which is the harshest cubing rule of any postal operator I have looked at.
None of these are laws of physics. They are pricing policies, and they get adjusted when the carrier decides space has become more valuable than weight. Which, as ecommerce parcels get lighter and bulkier every year, is roughly always.
What to do about it
Three things, in the order they pay off.
Measure your actual cartons, not your intended ones. Corrugated bulges. A box specified at 12 inches that arrives at 12.4 now rounds to 13, and the whole benefit of your neat spec disappears.
Check whether you are near the one cubic foot threshold. If your box is at 1,750 cubic inches, taking a centimetre off one dimension drops you under 1,728 and dimensional weight stops applying entirely. That is not a marginal saving, it is a cliff edge in your favour.
Compare carriers on the box you actually ship, not on a rate card. Because divisors differ, the cheapest carrier for a bulky parcel frequently is not the cheapest for a dense one, and the ranking flips somewhere in between.
